CNC Lathe Setup / Operator

Reports to

Department Lead Person

General Summary

CNC Set-up people set-up and operate CNC machines using work orders, blueprints, necessary fixtures and tooling. They perform inspection as required by the quality department. Production is run on the CNC equipment in a reasonable and timely manner.


1st Shift - 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Equipment Used

Shoda router, CNC routers, CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, CNC Saws, other equipment as needed.

Skills Required / Job Responsibilities


  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Math-basic, fractions, possible trigonometry
  4. Computer Literacy, ability to enter data as required


  1. Determine requirements from work order blueprints and other custom supplied data.
  2. Do an appropriate set-up ensuring both productivity, quality, and optimum cycle time.
  3. Run test program
  4. Have first piece approved by quality department.
  5. Inspect parts per print specifications and inspection intervals determined by the Quality department.
  6. Continually look for ways to improve on machining and set-up of job with Engineering Dept.
  7. Perform visual inspection at all times.
  8. Attend company courses and assist on project teams when asked.
  9. Completion and update of job specific set-up documentation.
  10. All other tasks assigned and apparent. May be cross-trained for other positions.

Work Environment

  1. CNC production area in plant

Experience Required


High School diploma or equivalent. Must be capable of reading and understanding blueprints, inspection equipment and requirements on work orders.

Job Experience

Minimum 2-4 years machining and setup experience, with some programming knowledge.

Range of Weightlifting

Up to 70 pounds

Safety Equipment and Requirements

Hearing protection and eye protection is required and provided on the manufacturing floor. Observe all safety regulations of the department and the plant. Safety-toe footwear must meet and fully comply with American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) Standard F2413-05, per OSHA Regulation Subpart l - Personal Protective Equipment, Section 1910.136 Foot protection, no loose clothing, hair or accessories.
